Khao Kheow Open Zoo (สวนสัตว์เปิดเขาเขียว)
“This massive zoo is a world-class conservation hub where you can drive your own golf cart right up to giraffes and the world-famous Moo Deng.”
Description
The true charm of Khao Kheow Open Zoo lies in its sheer scale. Forget the cramped cages of traditional urban zoos; this is a sprawling valley divided into diverse global climate zones connected by paved, tree-lined roads. It’s a perfect full-day family escape where you can drive around in a golf cart, hopping off to hand-feed friendly giraffes, marvel at grazing rhinos, or catch the adorable penguin parade. The vibe is wonderfully laid-back and breezy, though the tropical midday sun can be intense—so pack plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated.
Because the grounds are so massive, exploring on foot is practically impossible. Renting an on-site golf cart is highly recommended, though queues can get quite long on busy weekends. While a few older enclosures show their age, the overall experience is top-tier and constantly evolving. The current crowd-pleasers are Moo Deng, the globally viral pygmy hippo, and the immersive African Savanna zone where zebras and ostriches roam side by side. Tucked away in the Si Racha district, it’s further from Pattaya’s city center than most local sights, so make sure to factor in the extra travel time.
Why visit
Insider tips
💡 Watch your bags! The wild local monkeys are incredibly cheeky and will fearlessly raid your golf cart the moment you walk away to snap a photo.
💡 A golf cart is an absolute necessity. Trying to walk the park will leave you utterly exhausted and you'll miss most of the zones. If visiting on a Thai holiday, arrive early to secure yours.
💡 Buy feed as you go. There are fresh vegetable vendors stationed at almost every animal habitat, so there is no need to carry heavy bags from the main entrance.
💡 The zoo operates a shared open-air tram if you don't want to drive, but it runs on a fixed schedule with limited stops.
