Jomtien Beach. A long stretch of sand south of the city where people gather for a more laid-back experience compared to Pattaya’s bustling center.

Place Description

Don’t expect postcard-perfect azure waters and white sands at Jomtien Beach in Pattaya. It’s more of an urban retreat: expansive, with a wide promenade, but cleanliness can be an issue. The water often appears murky with a gray-green tint, and near the shore, it can be slightly dirty with foam. However, it’s much less chaotic than Pattaya Beach, offering more space for strolls or seaside lounging. This spot is ideal for a leisurely day out.

During the day, visitors sunbathe on rented loungers, and by evening, the promenade truly comes alive. Thai families and expat groups settle on mats on the sand, dining and enjoying music. A row of street vendors, cafes, and bars line the road, catering to every budget. The atmosphere at Jomtien Beach in Pattaya becomes especially vibrant around the Jomtien Night Market, the focal point after sunset.

  • Address: Jomtien Sai Moung Road, Pattaya City, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri
  • Opening Hours: Open 24/7. Loungers and vendors usually from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, night market and bars until late night.
  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning for a jog or after 4:00 PM when the heat subsides and the sunset scene begins.
  • Budget: Lounger with umbrella ≈ 100 ฿ per day, Singha beer ≈ 80-100 ฿, street food (skewers, som tam) ≈ 40-80 ฿.

Why Go

  • Space and Atmosphere: A perfect spot for long walks or runs along the sea — the shoreline is indeed lengthy.
  • Evening Charm: After sunset, the beach turns into a massive picnic area with music and affordable food.
  • Affordable Eats: A plethora of street vendors and cafes line the promenade, ensuring you won’t go hungry.
  • Beautiful Sunsets: The sun sets right into the sea, offering great photo opportunities.

Insider Tips

  • Water Quality: Don’t expect a comfortable swim. Most people prefer to sit by the water or dip their feet. Water quality varies greatly by season and time of day.
  • Watch Out for Jellyfish: During certain seasons, many jellyfish wash ashore, so be cautious.
  • Evening Vendors: Be prepared for persistent vendors selling fireworks and trinkets in the evenings. The police often overlook them.
  • Choosing Your Spot: The northern part of Jomtien (closer to Pratamnak Hill) is usually a bit cleaner and quieter than the southern section.

Logistics

  • Tuk-tuk (Songthaew): A white songthaew runs along the length of the beach. The route follows Jomtien Beach Road, standard fare — 10 ฿.
  • Taxi (Bolt/Grab): Search for “Jomtien Beach”. You can be dropped off anywhere, but expect traffic jams on the promenade during evening rush hours.
  • Own Transport: Parking is available along the promenade, but finding a free spot for a car during the day or evening is very lucky. It’s easier with a bike, but you’ll still need to hunt for a “pocket”.

The Unique Factor

During Songkran (Thai New Year), Jomtien hosts the largest water battles in Pattaya, turning the entire promenade into one giant wet party.
