Pattaya Viewpoint on Khao Phra Tamnak. This classic spot offers breathtaking views of Pattaya’s bay and is a must-visit for first-timers looking to get a sense of the city.

Place Description

This is arguably the most famous viewpoint in Pattaya, located on Khao Phra Tamnak, just a stone’s throw from the Big Buddha statue. By day, you’ll find the iconic view of the city and bay that graces many postcards. Tour groups flock here, making it bustling during the day. However, come evening, the atmosphere shifts; the heat fades, offering a perfect sunset viewing spot, and by night, the city lights twinkle below, providing a peaceful retreat.

Despite being a top attraction, it has its downsides. During the hot season, it can be sweltering with limited shade. Additionally, an abandoned skyscraper mars part of the panorama. Nevertheless, it’s an iconic landmark that gives a fantastic perspective of the city’s scale. Nearby, there’s a small shrine and a café for a quick break.

Basic Information

  • Address: Pattaya City, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri 20150 (Khao Phra Tamnak)
  • Opening Hours: The viewpoint is accessible almost 24/7. The shrine and café operate during daylight hours.
  • Best Time to Visit: At sunset (around 6 PM) for the best colors, or early morning to avoid the harsh sun and tourist buses. The night view is also impressive.
  • Budget: Entry to the viewpoint is free. Nearby cafés offer drinks, sandwiches, or Thai dishes.

Why Go

  • Capture that iconic shot of Pattaya Bay.
  • Get a bird’s-eye view of the city and its geography.
  • Bid farewell to the sun at one of the city’s prime sunset spots.
  • Visit the nearby shrine dedicated to the admiral and founder of the Thai navy.

Insider Tips

  • Be prepared for the perfect 180-degree view to be slightly obstructed by the skeleton of an abandoned high-rise. You’ll need to find the right angle to avoid it in photos.
  • The spot isn’t suitable for wheelchairs or those with mobility issues. Reaching the best photo spot requires descending quite steep steps.
  • During sunny weather, there’s a risk of heatstroke. Bring water and hats, as there’s little shade.
  • There’s parking available, but it fills up quickly at sunset. Bikes have an easier time finding space.

Logistics

  • Tuk-tuk (Songthaew): Route songthaews for 10 ฿ don’t go up here. You’ll need to hire one as a taxi, costing around 150-200 ฿ from Beach Road.
  • Taxi (Bolt/Grab): The simplest way. Just search for “Pattaya Viewpoint”. The car will take you right to the top.
  • Own Transport: Ideal option. The paved road to the hill is in excellent condition. There are parking areas for both bikes and cars at the top.

The Unique Factor

Beyond being Pattaya’s main viewpoint, Khao Phra Tamnak hosts the city’s broadcast tower, visible from almost any point in the city. If you get lost, it’s a reliable landmark to guide you.
