Saen Lan Monastery (Samnak Song Saen Lan)
“This peaceful hilltop sanctuary combines stunning panoramic island views with a heartwarming community of rescued cats and dogs.”
Description
You won’t find the noisy vendors and hectic crowds of Pattaya at the peaceful saen lan monastery. Perched in the hills above the popular Tawaen Beach, this active Buddhist sanctuary is a true hidden gem. The grounds feature a complex of small shrines, ancient stupas, and Buddha statues, drawing visitors looking for quiet reflection and a bird’s-eye view of the island. The resident monks also care for dozens of stray cats and dogs, filling the area with sleepy, friendly four-legged locals.
The main challenge, as many travelers note, is the steep and exhausting set of stairs leading to the Guanyin statue at the very top. This climb is definitely not recommended for anyone with knee issues or mobility difficulties. However, those who brave the ascent are rewarded with a spectacular viewing platform overlooking neighboring islands and the endless blue sea.
Why visit
Insider tips
💡 The road leading up is winding and very steep. Inexperienced scooter riders should exercise extreme caution on the descent.
💡 Bring mosquito repellent and plenty of water—there are no 7-Elevens up on the hill.
💡 Dress respectfully. Even though it's a popular hiking spot, it is still a sacred religious site, so please keep your shoulders and knees covered.
💡 If you want to earn some good karma, carry a bag of sand from the pile at the bottom of the hill. The monks are restoring an old stupa and appreciate any help hauling materials.
