Suvarnabhumi Airport (ท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ). Thailand’s main international hub and the starting point for most journeys, including trips to Pattaya.
Place Description
A massive, modern, and occasionally chaotic terminal, Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok is many travelers’ first impression of the country. This primary airport handles the majority of international flights. Be prepared for long walks between gates—this place is enormous. The layout is straightforward: the 4th floor is Departures, the 2nd floor is Arrivals, and the 1st floor houses bus ticket counters, including services to Pattaya, and a food court for staff and taxi drivers with more reasonable prices. Despite the abundance of shops and restaurants, expect typical big airport issues: passport control lines can exceed an hour during peak times, and food and water prices in the secure area are heavily marked up. Service can vary—from exceptionally helpful staff to complete indifference, as reviews note. It’s crucial to allow extra time for procedures to ensure a stress-free start to your journey to resorts like Jomtien.
Basic Information
- Address: 999, Nong Prue, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan 10540. Simply put, east of Bangkok, right on the way to Sukhumvit heading towards Pattaya.
- Operating Hours: Open 24/7.
- Best Time to Visit: Night and early morning flights are usually calmer. Daytime and evening hours are peak, expect queues at passport control.
- Budget: Airport prices: water ≈ 25 ฿, restaurant meals from 200 ฿. Paid luggage scales are a downside.
Why Go
- Vast selection of Duty Free shops and brand boutiques if you have time before departure.
- Clear navigation in English and Thai, despite the terminal’s enormous size.
- Plenty of cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes—from global fast-food chains to traditional Thai eateries.
- Direct access to the Airport Rail Link—take the express train to central Bangkok if you plan to explore the capital.
Insider Tips
- Avoid using paid luggage scales. If you need to check weight, visit any free airline check-in counter—they have accurate and free scales.
- The cheapest food and water are at the 24-hour 7-Eleven on Level 1, near the bus ticket counters.
- No smoking rooms past passport control for departures. If this is crucial for you, make arrangements beforehand.
- Arriving during peak times? Fill out your immigration card in advance (if required for your country) and head to the control desks quickly to avoid losing an hour or more.
Logistics
- Tuk-tuk (Songthaew): Not applicable. This is an international airport.
- Taxi (Bolt/Grab): Official metered taxis are on Level 1. Bolt/Grab apps work, but you’ll need to guide drivers to your exit (Gate). It’s often easier to call a taxi from the Departures level (Level 4).
- Own Transport: There is a huge multi-level parking lot, but it’s paid (about 250 ฿/day) and not cost-effective for long-term parking. Spaces are almost always available.
The Unique Factor
The name “Suvarnabhumi” translates from Sanskrit as “Golden Land”—an ancient Buddhist term for the prosperous region of Southeast Asia.
