U-Tapao Rayong–Pattaya International Airport. A compact military-civilian airfield serving as the gateway for Pattaya, located in neighboring Rayong province.
Don’t let the name fool you: this small and serene terminal is about an hour’s drive from Pattaya’s bustling center. Although it’s the closest **U-Tapao airport** to Pattaya, it’s technically in Rayong province. Its main advantage is its compact size and the lack of overwhelming crowds like in Bangkok. Navigation is straightforward, and the staff is generally friendly. Perfect for quick domestic flights if you value your time.
However, there is a downside, especially for passengers on certain charter flights. According to many stories, you might encounter unprecedentedly strict baggage checks, with scrutiny over every kilogram and inflexible staff. The service can become quite a trial. Be prepared for **U-Tapao airport** to leave either a pleasant impression of speed or a bitter taste of excessive bureaucracy.
Originally, U-Tapao was a Royal Thai Air Force base, heavily used by the US Air Force as a strategic site during the Vietnam War. To this day, it’s primarily a military airfield, and secondarily a civilian one, which partly explains the local rules and strictness.
