U-Tapao Rayong–Pattaya International Airport. A compact military-civilian airfield serving as the gateway for Pattaya, located in neighboring Rayong province.

Place Description

Don’t let the name fool you: this small and serene terminal is about an hour’s drive from Pattaya’s bustling center. Although it’s the closest **U-Tapao airport** to Pattaya, it’s technically in Rayong province. Its main advantage is its compact size and the lack of overwhelming crowds like in Bangkok. Navigation is straightforward, and the staff is generally friendly. Perfect for quick domestic flights if you value your time.

However, there is a downside, especially for passengers on certain charter flights. According to many stories, you might encounter unprecedentedly strict baggage checks, with scrutiny over every kilogram and inflexible staff. The service can become quite a trial. Be prepared for **U-Tapao airport** to leave either a pleasant impression of speed or a bitter taste of excessive bureaucracy.

Basic Information

  • Address: 70 หมู่ที่ 2 Sukhumvit Rd, Phla, Ban Chang District, Rayong 21130. Landmark: Sattahip Naval Base nearby.
  • Operating Hours: Open 24/7, but most cafes and shops are closed at night.
  • Best Time to Visit: Arrive 1.5 hours before domestic flights. For international flights, allow at least 3 hours, especially due to potential traffic on Sukhumvit Highway.
  • Budget: Taxi to Pattaya center ≈ 600-1000 ฿, excess baggage fee (per kg) ≈ 1300 ฿, special fruit basket ≈ 750 ฿.

Why Go

  • Convenient Domestic Flights: A great hub for flights to Phuket, Samui, and Chiang Mai without the need to travel to Bangkok.
  • Speed and Simplicity: Only a few gates, so getting lost is impossible. If there are no baggage issues, all formalities are quick.
  • Clean and Modern Terminal: Everything is fairly new, with well-maintained waiting areas and restrooms.
  • Peaceful Atmosphere: Compared to Suvarnabhumi, it’s almost rural calm, saving your nerves.

Insider Tips

  • Strict Baggage Control: On some flights (especially charters), everything is weighed, including handbags, and even 1 kg overage isn’t forgiven. Hand luggage may be rechecked right before boarding.
  • Fruit Trap: Carrying fruits in regular bags is often prohibited, forcing you to buy a special plastic basket for an exorbitant price (~750 ฿).
  • Taxi Scams: Bolt/Grab drivers at the entrance often refuse app rides, demanding double the price in cash. It’s safer to book a car in advance or be ready to negotiate.
  • Cheaper Eats Outside: Limited cafe options inside the terminal. A 7-Eleven and Amazon cafe are a three-minute walk from the entrance, offering snacks at reasonable prices.

Logistics

  • Tuk-Tuk (Songthaew): No direct routes from Pattaya. Not suitable for this transport.
  • Taxi (Bolt/Grab): Search for ‘UTP Airport’. It’s best to book transfers through reliable services in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises with prices.
  • Own Transport: There is a large, usually half-empty parking lot near the terminal. Leaving your car or bike is easy.

The Unique Factor

Originally, U-Tapao was a Royal Thai Air Force base, heavily used by the US Air Force as a strategic site during the Vietnam War. To this day, it’s primarily a military airfield, and secondarily a civilian one, which partly explains the local rules and strictness.
