Description

This Tawaen Beach viewpoint is Koh Larn’s ultimate photo op, offering that classic, sweeping shot of the white-sand crescent and bobbing speedboats below. Most travelers stop here for just a few minutes to snap pictures from the roadside, but if you have the stamina, there’s a 250-step staircase leading straight up the mountain. At the top, you’ll find a quiet, traditional Buddhist sanctuary where temple bells chime and the only sounds are barking dogs and the occasional buzzing mosquito.

Many visitors choose to stay at the roadside level because the climb is a real sweat-fest in the tropical heat. If you decide to head down towards the water from here, there’s an interesting path: cross the small bridge to the left to find a secluded, rugged stretch of coastline away from the main Tawaen crowds—just watch out for sea urchins. To get the absolute best out of this Koh Larn viewpoint, time your visit for the late afternoon when the harsh sunlight softens into a warm, golden glow.

Why visit

Epic panoramic views of Tawaen Bay, perfect for landscape photography.
A solid cardio workout—the climb up to the temple rises about 100 meters above the road.
Peace and quiet at the summit, offering a rare glimpse into the daily lives of local monks.
Easy access to a quiet, rocky shoreline with crystal-clear water just a short walk down and to the left of the bridge.

Insider tips

💡 The road leading up here is incredibly steep. If you aren't 100% confident on a scooter, don't risk it—take a songthaew or motorbike taxi instead.

💡 Tides on the beach below rise rapidly; keep an eye on your belongings if you hang out near the water’s edge.

💡 Stray dogs hang around the temple steps and summit. They are mostly harmless but can be territorial; walk past them calmly.

💡 Pack bug spray—the mosquitoes near the forested upper levels of the temple are relentless.
